After 50 plus years of observing nature, I witnessed something that I had never seen before: an adult doe seeking an open cornfield to escape biting ticks and mites with a redwing blackbird on her head. The bird was ridding her of the pesky insects, much like an oxpecker would on a cape buffalo.
To further emphasize this symbiotic spring event, I opted to paint a velvet antlered, red-coated whitetail buck grooming itself along with the blackbird. The various shades of green reeds and water, a favorite haunt of blackbirds, also served as an excellent backdrop to my painting.
